A supraglacial lake is any pond of liquid water on the top of a glacier. Although these pools are ephemeral, they may reach kilometers in diameter and be several meters deep. They may last for months or even decades at a time, but can empty in the course of hours.

Lakes may be created by surface melting during summer months, or over the period of years by rainfall, such as monsoons. They may dissipate by overflowing their banks, or creating a crevasse.
Such lakes are prominent in Greenland, where they have recently been understood to be large contributors to ice movement.

Un lago sopraglaciale è uno stagno di acqua liquida sulla sommità di un ghiacciaio. Sebbene queste piscine siano effimere, possono raggiungere chilometri di diametro ed essere profonde diversi metri. Possono durare mesi o addirittura decenni, ma possono anche svuotarsi in poche ore.

I laghi possono essere creati dallo scioglimento della superficie durante i mesi estivi o nel corso degli anni dalle piogge. Possono dissolversi traboccando dagli argini o attraverso un crepaccio di nuova formazione.
Questi laghi sono evidenti in Groenlandia, dove è stato recentemente ritenuto che contribuiscano in larga misura al movimento dei ghiacci.
