At 4,000 metres the sky comes closer and the air turns thin. The alpacas graze by the stream, in no hurry, as if the day had nowhere else to go. Far behind, El Misti watches over Arequipa as it always has, alone on the horizon. Up here the world shrinks to little: the wind, the water, the grass torn softly from the earth.

A 4000 metri il cielo si avvicina e l'aria si fa sottile. Gli alpaca brucano lungo il ruscello, senza fretta, come se la giornata non avesse altro posto dove andare. Lontano, El Misti veglia su Arequipa come fa sempre, solo sull'orizzonte. Quassù il mondo si riduce a poco: il vento, l'acqua, l'erba strappata piano alla terra.
